How to Use Blogging to Get into Publishing

How relevant is blogging to publishing? You’d be surprised. Blogging is not a hobby you should start specifically to enter publishing, but if you have one: mention it!

Blogging is a growing hobby, and a new career choice, in the 21st century. Having a blog gives people a platform to discuss what they want and voice their own opinions. But it also gives you the opportunity to work with others across multiple fields of industry. Not to mention develops skills in your own time which can help you in the long-run.

If you’re just starting out and are looking for an entry-level role within publishing, blogging is a great skill to have! So long as you have some work experience to back it up, blogging can tip the balance on whether or not you get an interview or even a job!

There are many different types of blogs, and all can help you gain many skills, from Coding, Design, Marketing, networking and more! But within the Publishing industry specifically book blogging is a very relevant skill!

Book blogging, or booktubing (video blogging), gives you the chance to voice your opinions about books and the latest book trends. A book blogger can write reviews, top ten lists, trend-reviews and more and each of these topics has some relevance to publishing. If you’re an established book blogger you may even work with publishers; taking part in blog tours, hosting giveaways and Q&As and attending book events.

Through communicating with publishers through these events, and voicing your own opinions, shows a potential employee that you understand the industry. You can see trends, converse with professionals and work to deadlines in a creative and independent manner.

This is relevant to all sectors, be it Trade or B2B, and all roles from IT, Editorial, Publicity and more!

It also shows an interest outside of work, which suggests to a future employer that you are a reliable candidate with a keen sense of the publishing industry.

Whether you’re a book blogger or not; blogging is skill to add to your CV!

Here some things you can highlight to show how blogging is useful to you:

  • Commitment: The longer you’ve been blogging the better. This shows commitment and creative thinking, and also proves that you can work well independently.
  • Networking: If you’ve worked with brands or publishers mention it on your CV. Not only does it prove your communicational skills, but also shows an understanding of the industries you mention. This is particularly good if the brands are relevant to the job you’re applying for.
  • Social Media and SEO abilities: Have you got 1000 twitter followers because of your blog publicity? Mention it! Do you understand SEO? Mention it!
  • Coding: If you’ve altered your HTML yourself or have learnt about it then put that down as a skill. For more information about HTML and how to do it, look at our series of posts here!
  •  Design: Did you design your blog, or make your own graphics/headers? Have you got original artwork or worked with others to create artwork? Put it on your CV.

There are so many relevant and useful skills which can be a real pull to employers when looking at CV.

Make sure you have other work experience to back up your blog experiences, but also be sure to highlight the skills you have learnt through blogging! It could mean the difference between getting a job interview and getting a job when you’re first starting out!

Beanstalk | Story Starters

Last month our chosen charity, Beanstalk, received some fantastic news! They were awarded £1million by the DreamFund (People’s Postcode Lottery) for their partnership ‘Story Starters’!

‘Story Starters’ is a collaborative project, which will see Beanstalk working with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and LuCiD at the University of Liverpool. They will be working together to help children from disadvantaged backgrounds, receive one-to-one support and mentoring to develop their language and reading skills!

Beanstalk is a national literacy charity who recruits volunteers to work in primary schools with children to help them develop their reading. Volunteers are specially trained to spend 30 minutes, two times a week, reading with a child one-to-one for a whole year. To help children develop the truly important skill of reading. In 2016 alone Beanstalk helped over 11,000 children across the UK, in deprived areas, and with this funding they can help many more.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a global programme operating worldwide, with more than 1 million children receiving books per month, to help them fall in love with reading. LuCiD is a research collaboration which is researching how children learn to communicate with language.

Previous research has shown that support within schools at schools can benefit children throughout their life. 20% are more likely to get 5 A*-C GCSE’s and earn more as adults.

This is a very exciting time for Beanstalk and we couldn’t be more pleased for them. With the £1million funding they will be able to recruit and train a further 600 Story Starter volunteers and help 1,800 children between 3-5 years old to develop their reading!

Atwood Tate: 2016 Achievements

If you follow us on Facebook you will have seen that today we released an exclusive Atwood Tate Infographic charting the achievements of Atwood Tate over 2016.

It has been a great year! We’ve placed lot of candidates in wonderful jobs across all sectors in permanent, part-time, contract, freelance and temping roles! We’ve expanded into IT roles and grown our B2B desk even more from 2015, and have also developed our social media! We now have an Instagram account and a new YouTube Channel!

It’s been an exciting year for the company as well as the staff, who have not only grown in number over 2016 but also went bowling, golfing and took part in a Walking Challenge for our charity Beanstalk!

It’s been wonderful!

And whilst it may be a bit early to say so, what with Christmas still to come and one more week left of work, we hope that 2017 is just as good, if not better than 2016!

Blogmas: Day 15

It’s the 15th! 10 days to go! Have you done you’re Christmas shopping today? Well hopefully we have as we’re going to our Christmas Office Lunch at 2pm! We’ve started a YouTube Channel!

If you’ve been following our Instagram and Twitter feeds you would know that yesterday we released our first ever Atwood Tate YouTube video!

We’ve started basic but soon we hope to be adding weekly content about things that you want to know about: how a specialist Publishing Recruitment agency works, the jobs we handle, the best ways to get a job in Publishing and more!

The reason we started our YouTube channel is to grow our presence across Social Media and better explain what we do and how we can help people find a job in Publishing in an interactive way! We want to make videos that you want to watch so if you have any questions or ideas send them our way! Comment below or let us know on another of social media accounts!

This channel will also allow you to meet our Atwood Tate team! From both our London and Oxford offices! We’re all going to be getting involved!

In yesterday’s video you meet two of our staff members: Karine Nicpon and Helen Speedy.

Karine is a Senior Publishing Consultant who handles editorial jobs in the STM & B2B sectors whilst Helen is the Associate Director of Atwood Tate and handles more Senior Roles across the whole of the publishing industry; she also manages the Perm (permanent jobs) team.

In the future we hope that you’ll get to hear from all of us Atwood, and understand the roles each of us play in the office, not to mention which consultant would be best to send your CV when you start looking for a job! That video will be coming up soon so keep your eye out for that!

Recruitment at Christmas Time

It’s that time of the year again. The first dates of the advent calendar have been pried open, the decorations have gone up, the streets of London are lit like a chandelier and, of course, Die Hard is on TV. But what does it mean work-wise?

Well, for a lot of offices, it means a short month as everyone closes up for the holidays. And where there are brief intervals, there are temporary contracts!

Already, the temps desk has had several short-term roles in that start immediately and run up to Christmas Eve. These vary from junior roles to more senior ones, with some contracts extending into the new year, depending on workload and performance.

A lot of people think Christmas is an unstable time to go job-hunting but here at Atwood Tate, we can attest to the fact that the search never stops. Some people like to wait it out, go into professional hibernation, so to speak, and check what the lay of the land is in the new year. How is anyone supposed to think about a new job when there’s Christmas shopping to do, family and friends to see, Star Wars films to watch in the cinema?

But we know from experience that some companies are looking to fill roles right up to the holidays and the industry is ripe with opportunities for the brave and the bold.

This very minute, we are reading applications, arranging interviews, sending congratulations, playing matchmaker between client and candidate like we always do. Christmas doesn’t need to be a quiet period, it can be the ladder to a very different year for you! So, if you’re looking for a change, drop us a line. John McClane was in the wrong place at the wrong time but if you’re smart, you could be in the right place at the right time!

Work experience in Publishing – Is this the best way to break into publishing?

Common Symptom #1: Work Experience

  • Work experience. Are those two words causing you dread? It’s a natural reaction if they do.

For anyone renting privately in London, working for free simply isn’t viable. But don’t despair. There are publishers offering paid internships from £200-300 per week, depending on sector. It’s not for the faint of heart but it is worth it, if you really want it.

And therein lies part of the problem – a lot of people really want it. The market is saturated, which has in part devalued any and all graduates trying hard to break into the industry. You’re a fearsome young go-getter, dedicated, driven and you love books more than anyone else in the world – except the next person!

When you have no experience to refer to, you’re not exactly starting from a position of strength. So, work experience in publishing becomes the avenue through which you not only separate yourself from the pack but make the necessary contacts. While we all might like to think that our CV speaks for itself, the fact is that people remember a face, a conversation, an attitude, more than the most articulate and knowledgeable covering letter ever put to paper.

A publishing internship, or even a few weeks’ work experience in a publishing environment, puts you in the building. Here, at Atwood Tate, we call it FID – foot in door. And it’s a good place to start, particularly when it comes to temping.

On the temps and freelance desk, the turnaround is sometimes so quick an intern is exactly what we need, someone who has some experience but is not necessarily a seasoned pro, or doesn’t have a 4-week notice to give, and is looking to prove themselves. These are often jobs which are not long-term but might last the duration of, say, a project or acting as an additional resource during a busy period. Experienced candidates are not much interested in jumping ship for a few months but junior candidates can use this as a springboard to the rest of their publishing career.

A lot of publishing houses offer publishing internships and work experience. Many of them advertise them directly on their Careers page. Sites like Indeed and the Publishers Association also advertise them, as well as on company Twitter pages, the Society of Young Publishers and blogs such as Publishing Interns.

It’s important to do a little research and know what sector you’d like to work in. And when you’ve gotten your foot in the door, let us know – we just might be able to help you open it the rest of the way!

Byte the Book’s- Blogs, Vlogs and Books: How can you use different platforms to build an audience.

This Byte the Book event focussed on discussions about content across different platforms and how best to use each medium successfully. The discussion was chaired by journalist Daisy Buchanan and her panelists included: Lisa Edwards (publisher at Carlton Books and author of the blog Because I Can), Rosie Allimonos (Digital Content Expert at YouTube) and Greg Jenner (Author of A Million Years in a Day – A History of Everyday Life and Historical Consultant to Horrible Histories).

Greg commented how blogging taught him how to become a better writer and how using a platform with an audience already there helped him to attract followers. He approached the Huffington Post directly and has his work spread across different platforms. Having an audience for his writing also gave him some clout when pitching to publishers for his book.

Rosie commented on how Vlogs are being used by older people, especially in beauty and can also be used to gain valuable audience feedback for writers such as ”The Fault in Our Stars” author John Green.

Social talent agencies are also now on the rise looking for social media writers such as “Buzzfeed”.

When it comes to building your social media brand as a writer, stick to your values and pick a unique quality about you that you can repeat. Also write in 1st person narratives as this is an effective way to get an audience to identify with you, and break down a wall. Blogging can be like keeping a diary or journal. They also used the example of  “The Diary of Anne Frank”.  In order to keep things interesting in your writing, throw in a bit of jeopardy and surprises.

Twitter was also mentioned and how to keep tweets real in 140 characters. You can use twitter to be bold, intelligent but make sure you have a safe audience when making opinions.
