The Perks of Home-Working

Some of you may be used to working from home already but it’s very likely that the current situation will mean many more of us will be doing this from now on for some weeks.

If you’re used to working with a team in an office, working on your own at home can be a culture shock. It’s important to keep communicating with your colleagues and manager to ensure you feel engaged and motivated. Here are a few ideas and tips to help…

Checklist for companies / managers

  • Think about what equipment, software, access and logins your team may need to do their work remotely
  • Do a quick check on laptops, chargers, headsets, webcams etc to make sure they’re in working order before giving out
  • Ask your team to share their home/mobile contact numbers and circulate this list
  • Check your office can forward calls to another number and ideally turn the function off outside of work hours. Can people log in to check voicemails if left?
  • If people don’t have an unlimited phone package agree to cover expenses for usage
  • Keep a record of important stakeholder / supplier contacts and share with your team
  • Get everyone to access / download a video conference app like Zoom so you can have video meetings with each other and customers
  • Decide on an instant messenger eg Skype / LinkedIn etc so your team can communicate amongst themselves without clogging up emails
  • Agree guidelines on checking in to confirm you’re well and able to work that day / when plan on taking lunch / arrange cover for time off

For when working you’re at home

  • You’ll want to be as effective as possible, so make sure you have a clear workspace with suitable work surface and chair
  • Think about structuring your day – you might be able to start and finish earlier if not commuting
  • Try not to get distracted with household chores, factor in some break times and if possible take a proper break outside at lunchtime and get some fresh air, go for a walk etc
  • Communicate with your team on your movements and any successes / useful tips that have worked well for you
  • At the end of the day, make your to-do list for tomorrow and pack up the desk so you have clear free time separate from your working day

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Atwood Tate Update

We are all aware of the Coronavirus and how it is impacting us all on a global level. As a company, we are taking measures to ensure that we can continue running as usual under these difficult circumstances. We are fully cloud based, so our team now has the option to work from home and you will be able to contact us on our usual phone numbers and by email during normal working hours. We are holding meetings and candidate registrations by Skype or Zoom if not able to meet in person.

We are staying vigilant and keeping up-to-date with advice from the government, Public Health England (PHE) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) and will be following all advice given.

We are confident that any further developments will have little effect on our day to day operations, including; Accepting new recruitment briefs (temporary, contract and permanent); Shortlisting and registering candidates; Organising interviews (potentially virtual); Managing offers; Payroll processing; General compliance.

We will do our best to keep all our stakeholders, including contractors and clients up to date with the latest government guidance in terms of recruitment and to support any queries you may have.

Welcome to the team Azraa!

Azraa has joined Atwood Tate as our new administrator where she will be supporting the permanent team! Azraa will be supporting our consultants by carrying out key admin duties. Recently completing her Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature and with a keen interest in the publishing industry and a love for books, Azraa was drawn to us!

What is your favourite book series?

My all-time favourite book series is the Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare!

What is your dream destination?

My dream destination is to visit Bali!

If you could have dinner with anyone dead/alive who would it be?

I would have dinner with Margaret Atwood because I’m a huge fan of her work, I think she’s very inspiring and would be an interesting dinner date!

Cover Letter Dos and Don’ts

You have found the job of your dreams, researched the role and the company and perfected your CV. Wait, and you still have to write your cover letter, right? Yes you do!

Do not underestimate the importance of the cover letter, it works simultaneously with your CV to reflect and highlight the skills you have outlined.

A well written cover letter will help you to stand out and increase your chances of the recruitment manager remembering you.

We know how daunting application writing can be, so we are sharing our top dos and don’ts.

Do:

  • Research the role and the company before you start writing
  • Have a clear structure; use paragraphs and an easy to read font
  • Have an opening sentence with a positive tone that also signals that you are applying for this specific role `I am writing to apply for….’
  • Highlight why you are interested in the role, and what is attractive about the company
  • Let them know why they should interview you by summarising your strengths and skills that make you the best candidate to do that job
  • Your skills and strengths should be tailored to the requirements and objectives set out in the job description
  • Emphasise what you can do for the company, you can outline a career goal that meets with the company’s objectives or expand on the key skills in your CV
  • Thank the employer for their time and that you look forward to hearing from them
  • If you start with `Dear name’ you should end with `yours sincerely’ and if you start with `Dear Sir/Madam’ you should end with `yours faithfully’.
  • Check your spelling and grammar not once, but twice or three times  

Don’t:

  • Send a generic, untailored cover letter
  • Write more than one page. The aim of a cover letter is to summarise concisely why you are applying for the role, why you are the right candidate for the job and why you want to join the organisation
  • Use creative fonts, colours, abbreviations
  • Include unnecessary personal information or skills/qualifications not specific to the job
  • Include your salary preferences or requirements unless asked by the employer
  • Generalise or be too casual in tone. Instead be specific in how you have excelled in previous roles
  • Write without having researched the company and what your role involves
  • Send your cover letter without checking you have addressed it to the right company and contact

10 Dos and Don’ts of CV Writing

Are you putting off writing or editing your CV? One of the most commonly asked questions we get is about the format of CV’s. To help you along with your CV writing process we have written a summary of our top 10 dos and don’ts of CV writing!

Dos:

  • Keep your CV at two pages max (we know it is hard!). You need to demonstrate you can prioritise relevant information with the content you provide
  • Introduce yourself in a personal statement at the top of the page, including your skills and what you are looking for in a few sentences
  • Include your contact details and a link to your LinkedIn profile
  • Save your CV in a word doc or PDF in the format `full name and CV’  
  • Set out the dates of your employment, the company and your position clearly with accurate spacing
  • You can include a brief description of the company you worked for, followed by bullet points to present your achievements, using figures and stats where necessary (use power words!)
  • The education and employment sections should be in reverse chronological order. You can include a `relevant experience’ section
  • Have a skills section highlighting any IT and language speaking skills. You can also include any courses/training, driving skills or leadership skills that are relevant
  • Choose a professional font, one that is easily read and looks good when printed or scanned
  • Important: Be meticulous in your spelling and grammar!

Don’ts:

  • Avoid long, chunky looking paragraphs (white space is your friend!)
  • List all of your GCSEs/O-Levels or every module from your degree, just those related to the job you are applying for
  • Experiment with size (making the text bigger to fill the space/smaller to fit) or wacky colours and fonts
  • DOB, picture and marital status are not necessary
  • Use acronyms, technical terms or clichés (instead demonstrate clichés such as `hard worker’ in your experience and achievements)
  • Use personal pronouns
  • Include irrelevant skills and work experience (not including them will not decrease your chance of getting the job!)
  • Explain why you left every single position. You can cover this at interview, but also in your covering letter.  If you are not currently in employment and want to explain why, put a brief note in your covering letter.  If you are applying through an agency, be transparent with them and they can help you to explain.  If you have done a series of fixed term contracts, putting “fixed term contract” next to the job title will signal that this is why you haven’t stayed longer in the role
  • Submit your CV with unprofessional email addresses or names
  • Lie! With a simple search a lie can be found out and this won’t go down well with your interviewer

Extra Tip: Don’t leave gaps.  Account for any gap years/sabbaticals or times out of work, but briefly and without it becoming distracting.  If you omit something, it will raise more questions than a brief sentence accounting for the gap.

Brexit for employers and job seekers

Our industry body, the REC (Recruitment and Employment Confederation) is working hard to help us prepare for Brexit, whatever the outcome.

We are keeping abreast of the latest developments so that we can update you on how an outcome will affect us and employment in the UK generally.

There are links on this page to a number of useful publications and resources suitable for Candidates who are wondering what the situation will be for them.

  1. If you are an EU national and you want to continue living in the UK: https://www.gov.uk/staying-uk-eu-citizen
  2. If you are an UK Citizen in the EU: https://www.gov.uk/uk-nationals-living-eu
  3. New EU citizens arriving in UK will be able to stay 3 months before applying for a visa. Following this you will get remain for 36 months.

The key message is: Don’t worry if you’re already working here in the UK, you will be able to stay!

But you will need to make an application – the EU Settlement Scheme will open by 30 March 2019 and you will be able to apply until 30 June 2021, provided you were resident in the UK by 31 December 2020.

5 years’ residence will lead to settled status with a bridging pre-settled status for new arrival.

The Book Trade Charity

What do they do?

The Book Trade Charity is a fantastic organisation, offering support, guidance and financial assistance to all those in the book trade industry presently, in the past or striving to be in the future.

Founded on the principles that age, health and finance should not be a barrier to this creative and inspiring industry, the charity aims to overcome these barriers.

How can they help you?

If you have been struck by an unexpected illness, financial problems, medical situations or redundancy for example you may be eligible for assistance.

By offering grants, housing, and confidential and friendly support to tackle these problems.

The Retreat and Bookbinders Cottages – both in London, are residential facilities for those working or have previously worked in the book trade. Offering a fantastic, comfortable and community centred atmosphere, with individuals who share common experiences.

Travelling costs for interviews, extra financial assistance to move to London for jobs are also ways the charity can help if you meet their requirements.

What about if I haven’t worked in trade books before?

Extra assistance during internships, supporting in education or training courses, financial costs in attending interviews are some of the ways the charity can help you.

www.booktradeentrysupport.org – this website is aimed to provide information to those who are new to the trade. Take a look, it may just help you in reaching your dream job!

Are you looking to get back into work?

Going back to work can be scary and a challenge.

The charity can assist you with this transfer. Re-training after being made redundant, assistance with training courses, financial grants are some of the ways the charity can help you.

Become Involved

Donations are massively appreciated, both one-off, or regular monthly or annual. Currently the charity’s annual grants budget (across all the areas in which it helps) is some £250,000, and donations are relied upon to replenish the budget every year.

If you are up for some fun, you can run an event (possibly a bake sale?) a tasty treat! Or if you are up for something more challenging you can also take part in a run or swim!

The charity also has 5 places in the London Marathon each year – you can achieve a huge personal success and contribute to a great cause at the same time!

There are more then just Editorial, Marketing and Publicity jobs in Publishing and for that reason we’re are thrilled to welcome David – the newest member of the Atwood Tate team who shall be handling all our  IT & Data roles!

David is a Senior Consultant at Atwood Tate and has extensive experience in both the publishing and recruitment industry with a key focus on business areas such as: Digital, Technology, Change & Transformation, Information Security and Data & Analytics.

He started his publishing career as a Corporate Project Leader for Swets Information Services who were a subscription and information agency that worked on behalf of a multitude of publishers. He then went on to work for NLA media access as a Senior Account Manager where he provided collective licensing solutions in order to protect publishing industry’s copyright. In June 2014 he left the NLA to pursue a career in recruitment and worked as a consultant for a Digital, Technology and Change & Transformation agency before joining Atwood Tate.
