These ‘silver’, ‘gold’ and ‘platinum’ service levels are built on transparency, honesty and commitment.
Our most popular level is our ‘gold’ service, which is based on an exclusive partnership with our client and rewards their trust in us by offering our most competitive rates. Our aim is to understand our client’s strategic goals and develop long-term relationships.
Hiring managers often believe that working with more than one Recruitment Agency is an advantage as it can give them greater access to more qualified candidates. In reality, the opposite is often true.
Whilst choosing to put your vacancy with several recruitment agencies can lead to a greater volume of candidates, it does not necessarily result in the best qualified candidates.
Often when recruiters are competing against each other it becomes a race to submit candidates, but these are not necessarily the best candidates. In this scenario it is tempting for recruiters to only concentrate on the most active candidates, whilst in reality you need to go beyond this readily available candidate pool, to create the best short-list for the individual client.

Today, 8th September, is International Literacy Day, a day observed by UN member states to internationally recognise the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies, and aims to increase literacy around the world.

This year, the focus is on Digital Literacy, and how the changes in technology and the move towards new digital environments is changing the understanding of what literacy is, and how a lack of digital literacy skills could further marginalise those without basic literacy skills.
To mark this day, some of Atwood Tate have thought back to those books which were formative in helping us learn to read initially; books which are often forgotten but are hugely important first steps.
The first books I can remember reading were The Magic Key series, which followed Biff, Chip and Kipper, created by Roderick Hunt and published by Oxford University Press. As part of the National Curriculum, a whole generation must have learnt to read, thanks in part to The Magic Key.
I still remember my parents reading the very first Harry Potter books to me as a child. It really instilled the joys of reading in me from an early age.

I don’t remember learning to read, but some of the first books I remember loving were books by Beatrix Potter and the Mr Men books.
I loved the Usborne Book of Wizards and the Usborne Book of Witches. The illustrations by the late Stephen Cartwright take me right back to childhood when I look at them now and I’m so pleased to see that they are still in print, even if it’s in a slightly different format. I also used to spend hours looking through The Usborne First Thousand Words trying to spot the little duck in each picture. My Mum, a German teacher, also bought us a copy of this in German in the hope we’d also become linguists…
This week, our Oxford based Recruitment Consultant Alice Crick takes to the Hot Seat.
If you could write ‘THE book’ on something, the definitive how-to guide on any subject, which topic would you choose?
If I could write one incredible book on something, it would definitely be a self-help guide on living a truly fulfilling and happy life. As cheesy as it sounds, I don’t think anyone’s quite cracked it yet, and it would be amazing to be the one with all of the answers to those big life questions.
What three books changed your life?
Three books that really struck a chord with me are The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, and The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid. The first two are quite similar, and I found them both particularly emotional reads as they really resonated with me. You definitely learn to empathise with the main characters, which in turn teaches you how to better relate to others in the real world. I think that is one of the most genuine signs of a good book. The Reluctant Fundamentalist was the first book I ever studied on my English Literature course at university; I found it impressive how Hamid provokes western readers to consider a new cultural perspective from ‘the other side’. It’s another incredibly powerful read that makes you question the cultural biases ingrained into us from a young age.
What have been the highlights of the past year?
My highlights from the past year have definitely been graduating from Royal Holloway with a 2:1 in English, moving to Oxford with my boyfriend, and starting a full time job as a Publishing Recruitment Consultant here at Atwood Tate. Most people don’t take on so many big changes all at once, but here I am!
What is on your birthday wish list?
Home things, home things and… more home things! Having moved very recently, I’m eager to get my ‘hygge’ on (the Danish art of living well), by making my home super cosy just in time for those chilly autumn and winter months.
Before committing to a course at university, I spent a year learning how to be a professional musician at an academy. As you can see, that one didn’t quite work out!

You can choose up to three preferences, from a list, for three separate areas:
- Job Type: i.e. Editorial, Sales or Marketing
- Job Sector: i.e. STM, MedComms or B2B
- Job Location: i.e. London, Oxford or International
You can also choose whether or not to receive Job Alerts. Job Alerts are tailored to your preferences, so if your top preferences are Editorial in a B2B sector if a job becomes available you will be alerted via email.
**Please note that when you sign up for Job Alerts you may receive several immediately. This will stop after a few hours, as these will be our current jobs that suit your preferences.
Also, our Job Alerts are not tailored to salary so some roles may be too senior or too junior for you depending on your experience. The Next Step
Or, Ellie will respond herself to clarify any questions we may have, or to suggest that you gain more work experience. The majority of our clients require at least 3-6 months’ worth of in-house publishing experience before considering candidates for a role. Although our Temps desk may consider applicants with less experience who have admin skills, for temp roles.
Don’t be disheartened if we respond suggesting you need to gain more experience. We have resources we can point you to, to help you gain that experience! Once a profile has been reviewed by Ellie and forwarded to one of the consultants, that consultant will then get in touch with you! They may invite you to register with us in person, at either our London or Oxford office depending on your immediate location. We can also do registrations via the phone and Skype.
When you have registered online you are registered with Atwood Tate. You do not need to meet us in person before you can apply for our roles, you may do so immediately.
When a consultant organises to meet with you in person it is to gather more information about your past experiences, your skills and where exactly you would like to work within publishing. You and the consultant will sort out a time and date suitable for you both and directions/information will be given before your registration.
It is an informal registration, but you can use the experience as a practice interview if you like. You will be asked to complete a couple of forms, including our Equal Opportunities form, and you’ll be required to bring along two forms of identification: a passport & your National Insurance number.
The meeting shouldn’t take more than 20-30 minutes, but it is your opportunity to ask us any questions you have, to highlight where you want to go within your career and to discuss any vacancies that we currently have.
Applying for a Job
Whilst registering with Atwood Tate you can apply for any of our current vacancies. However, if you require more information we can only forward further details, such as salary, location and the company name after you have registered with us, due to client confidentiality.
When you apply your information will be forwarded directly to the consultant handling the position. We recommend that you do not apply for more than three roles at a time, unless you are certain you have the required experience.
If you would like to contact us for more information regarding a job please have the reference number and Job Title to hand. They will be on the job alert or our website.
We will let you know within a few days whether or not you are suitable for the role. Although, if you have not heard from us after two weeks it is unlikely we can consider you for that position.
